Northumbria University invites applications for two 3-year Post-Doctoral Research Associate in ice-sheet modelling and numerical studies of ice and ocean interactions. Each position is for 36 months. Research activities are linked to two ongoing EU H2020 large international projects: Projecting Sea-Level Rise: From Ice Sheets to Local Implications (PROTECT) and Ocean-Cryosphere Exchanges in Antarctica: Impacts on Climate and the Earth System (OCEAN:ICE). We invite candidates with interest in applying theoretical and numerical approaches to cutting-edge research questions related to ice-sheets dynamics and their interactions with other climate components. There is considerable scope for exploring new ideas and concepts to tackle key questions related to topics such as subglacial drainage from the Antarctic Ice Sheet and impacts on ocean, the fracture and rifting of ice shelves, and the interactions between the Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Southern Ocean.
The successful candidates will be part of the Inter-Disciplinary Research Theme Extreme Environments , and based at the Department of Geography & Environmental Sciences at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK. The department is ranked 2nd in the UK for research power in Geography and Environmental Studies, with over 90% of our research outputs, and 100% of our research impact rated as world-leading or internationally excellent (UK Research Excellence Framework, 2021).
Candidates will work closely with Prof. G. Hilmar Gudmundsson and become part of a sizeable group of researchers at the peak of excellence The Future of Ice on Earth at Northumbria University.
Successful candidates will have a PhD in either Physics or Mathematics, or in a related discipline such as Physical Oceanography, Geophysics or Earth Sciences, or have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in numerical modelling of icesheets. The post will commence in fall 2023, with 1st of Sept being the target date.
