The project MODES, funded by the European Research Council, arises in the framework of the emerging interest for nonlinear multimode processes in optical fibres and wants to extend it to on-chip optical waveguides, where the study of the multimode dynamics is still on its infancy. By exploiting the nonlinear interaction between several spatial modes in on-chip waveguides, novel ultra-compact and efficient optical sources will be investigated. These sources will allow light emission in a broad frequency spectrum, and will find application in several fields from medical, to security, to sensors.

You will work in the Multimode Photonics Group of Dr Massimiliano Guasoni (https://www.orc.soton.ac.uk/multimode-photonics-group), and will be mainly involved in laboratory experiments. On-chip optical waveguides will be characterized and tested to implement nonlinear frequency conversion.

To be successful you will have a proven experimental background as well as a good knowledge of nonlinear optics and finite element method software tools e.g. Comsol Multiphysics

The applicant should have a solid experimental background as well as good knowledge of nonlinear optics and finite-element method software tools (e.g. Comsol Multiphysics). You will also have a PhD** or professional qualifications and experience in Photonics. Experience in optical waveguide fabrication is an asset.

In return you will receive training, be supported by experienced researchers and have an opportunity to supervise PhD students, develop your own projects and to apply for funding. You will have access to state-of-the art cleanrooms and will enjoy the collaboration with world-leading academics.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is central to the ethos in the Zepler Institute.
