Epidemiology/Data Scientist to join the Data Science Group at the Primary Care Research Centre

About us

The Data Science Research Group (DSG) at the University of Southampton is based in the Primary Care Research Centre. Our work uses large volumes of complex, heterogeneous, multi-dimensional and often unstructured datasets from different sources. We aim to understand patterns, trends, and associations of diseases to inform preventive action in the UK and international contexts. Our group includes a diverse multidisciplinary team conducting high quality and innovative research addressing complex health and social care challenges of the 21st century. We employ traditional statistical and epidemiological methods, alongside cutting-edge  artificial intelligence algorithms to gain insights into real-world problems. This is combined with qualitative research to provide a deeper understanding and application of big data findings.

About the role

The Data Science Research Group at the Primary Care Research Centre is recruiting. This position is a unique opportunity to work with an experienced, fast-paced and high-output research group, working closely with our team to help deliver on grants funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) with a focus on understanding patterns in populations with multiple long-term conditions.

The post holder will be responsible for submitting data requests, cleaning, planning and conducting rapid longitudinal analysis of electronic health records, with reproductive analytical pipelines. You will use CPRD and SAIL datasets including novel linkage with social care and climate change variables. You will work independently to conduct analysis, draft high-quality academic research papers and convey results of findings through presentations using interactive visualisations. You will be working under time pressures with tight deadlines.

The post is funded for 10 months in the first instance with a further 2 years of additional funding available.

About you

If you believe you meet the requirements for the post, come and join us to take forward this exciting opportunity and become part of an innovative and dynamic research group where you will be valued, included and supported. The Research Fellow must have a PhD in epidemiology, data science or other related field or relevant experience. You will have strong data linkage and advanced statistical analysis skills, including experience with longitudinal analysis on STATA, R or Python, which can be applied to large-scale electronic health record data from hospitals and primary care, as well as experience of analysing multi-source electronic health records.
