We are seeking to recruit a part-time fixed-term Research Fellow at 50% FTE for 18 months (July 1, 2024-Dec 31, 2025).

You will be part of a research project, named “Cultural Entrepreneurship in Vegan Meat Markets”, funded by UK Economic and Social Science Research Council (ES/Y003667/1), with opportunities of co-publishing with the investigators. The project examines how value-oriented vegan meat entrepreneurs in the UK maintain and adapt their moral claims (climate change, animal welfare, health) while the vegan meat markets are being rapidly mainstreamed. The University of Surrey leads this project that promises to generate high quality research papers and industry/policy impact.

What you’ll be doing 

The research fellow will work closely with the principle investigator (and co-investigators) to collect rich qualitative data for the ESRC-funded large research project. This involves:

  • active engagement with potential informants over social media or other outreach activities, initiating and arranging online or face-to-face interviews, attending events (e.g., Vegan Fairs) in other UK cities and building a strong network of UK vegan meat producers and non-profit organisations working in this sector. 
  • conducting in-depth semi-structured interviews
  • collecting social media data relating to vegan meat
  • analysing qualitative data and working with other investigators in preparing manuscripts.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Manage the social media and website for the project
  • Manage two events in the UK conducted by the project members (marketing and managing the delegates, coordinating with the venues.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

  • The post holder should have a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., management, sociology, political science), or, they should be in the final year of their doctoral studies.
  • The post holder should have expertise in qualitative research, including the ability to conduct field work (interviews, observations), and to interpret and analyse results. 
  • The post holder should have good project management, communication and organising skills.
  • The post holder is capable of engaging with people on social media and manage the project’s social media site.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£34,980) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate.  Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£36,024).
