The Control and Engineering Biology group at the University of Warwick’s School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a full-time fixed term postdoctoral research fellow to start as soon as possible not exceeding the funding end date of the 28.2.27 (possible extension) with interests in biological systems modelling to support our new EPSRC-funded project Combinatorial Biosynthetic Pathway Engineering.

About the project:

The development of efficient microorganism-driven processes that generate bioactive natural products is of immense biotechnological, biomedical, environmental and economic importance. This project will transform biosynthetic pathway engineering into a more predictable and efficient process through integration of combinatorial assembly and automated pathway variant analysis with holistic modelling procedures that incorporate genetic-, metabolic- and resource-related factors. This will be underpinned by novel technological approaches married to advanced computational strategies.

This project will generate important new fundamental understanding of how complex pathway control is achieved in living cells as well as procedures of value to the commercial sector. This is a collaborative interdisciplinary project involving the Darlington group in the School of Engineering and McCarthy and Alberti groups in the School of Life Sciences.

About this modelling role:

This post-doctoral role seeks to develop the holistic systems-wide dynamic model which captures metabolism and gene expression constraints. If you have expertise in dynamical modelling and model calibration/data fitting and an interest in applying these methods to engineering biology, then please do apply.

You will develop the modelling framework using data provided by the experimental team lead by Prof. John McCarthy and will then use this model to propose new engineering strategies to enhance productivity and yield.

You will take the initiative in your own work and work collaboratively to the project goals, as well as support members of the wider research teams. You will present your work at national and international conferences and be expected to write up your research for publication. You will be able to work closely with the wider project team, including working with the project partners, and will deal with any management/administration problems that may arise from time to time and produce and present regular project reports to ensure that the project objectives and deadlines are met. You will be expected to keep diligent records and computer code.
