Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in terahertz time-domain systems, quantum cascade lasers, or terahertz science? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities?

We seek a Research Fellow to join our large, well-funded group to investigate the interaction of acoustic waves with terahertz-frequency quantum cascade lasers. This exciting two-year position will give you the opportunity to work on a several large EPSRC-funded projects at the forefront of our rapidly growing field. You will focus on the development of acoustic modulation schemes for terahertz-frequency quantum cascade laser (QCL) devices, exploring the potential for surface acoustic waves (SAWs) to alter and ultimately control carriers within them and therefore their light output. The applications for this work include high-speed wireless communications and the development of new schemes for terahertz spectroscopy. The project will also relate to ongoing projects in the area of SAW-based modulation of magnetic multilayer systems, and other SAW-based projects collaborative between Schools across our Faculty.

You will join a world-leading terahertz group at the University of Leeds, with state-of the-art growth, device fabrication, and terahertz experimental facilities, including THz time-domain spectroscopy (both low and high power), on-chip, cryogenic, and pump-probe systems.

You will have a background in laser physics/optics and experience in at least one of the following areas: terahertz time-domain systems; cleanroom fabrication of semiconductor-based devices; megahertz to gigahertz surface acoustic wave devices, terahertz quantum cascade lasers, or superlattice-based emitters or detectors. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, a proactive approach to problem solving, and be comfortable interacting day-to-day with academics of all career stages across several institutions.

What we offer in return

  • 26 days holiday plus approx.16 Bank Holidays/days that the University is closed by custom (including Christmas) – That’s 42 days a year!
  • Generous pension scheme plus life assurance – the University contributes 21.6% of salary.
  • Health and Wellbeing: Discounted staff membership options at The Edge, our state-of-the-art Campus gym, with a pool, sauna, climbing wall, cycle circuit, and sports halls.
  • Personal Development: Access to courses run by our Organisational Development & Professional Learning team, and self-development courses including languages, Creative Writing, Wellbeing Therapies and much more.
  • Access to on-site childcare, shopping discounts and travel schemes are also available.

And much more!
