The Institute for Future Transport and Cities (IFTC) within Coventry University is seeking to recruit a capable and experienced Post-Doctoral Research Fellow with a demonstrable research track record as part of a grant-funded, industrial collaborative project to develop an electric vehicle battery pack along with tools to enable battery re-use at end of life.
The project, with industrial contribution, amounts to a total of £9 million, spread over 5 partners with the varied backgrounds necessary to deliver the project.
This is an immediate opening for a highly motivated individual with a PhD in electrical engineering, chemical engineering, physics or chemistry (physical/electrochemical) to join the eMobility Group in IFTC. The focus of the successful applicant’s work in this post will be the development of diagnostic techniques and tools to support quality-control testing of battery modules and packs on the assembly line, and repurposing of electric vehicle (EV) batteries at end of life. These techniques will employ elements of impedance spectroscopy, empirical modelling and machine learning techniques. A strong background in electrochemistry or battery/fuel cell characterisation with knowledge of impedance techniques are essential for this position. The position is research focused; however, the individual should be prepared to undertake some postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.
The successful candidate will be part of a new and vibrant research group based at the Centre for Low Carbon Propulsion Systems (C-ALPS), which is part of the IFTC. The Group brings together existing CU expertise with academics in energy storage, power electronics and electric machines. In total the new group comprises of over 25 full time academics making it one of largest UK based academic team conducting E-mobility research. Recent investment into C-ALPS facilities includes:
- Li-ion cell manufacturing equipment
- battery characterisation lab
- high voltage and low voltage electronics labs
- EMC chamber and test equipment
- power electronics and e-machines labs
- hydrogen research lab and fuel cell system test faciliy
These facilities enable wide range of research activities– from cell assembly, through formation to battery grading and diagnostics, performance and safety evaluation. In parallel, novel sensors design and application supports the battery diagnostics activities.
This will be a fixed-term contract for 28-31 months. Salary is commensurate with experience and is competitive. Interested candidates should include a CV and brief summary of research accomplishments with their application.
