Research Fellow: COMbAT Fatigue Intervention Development

Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £45,585 to £54,395 with potential progression once in post to £61,198. Grade 8 

Contract Type: Fixed Term contract up to 20 months

We are seeking to appoint an autonomous and experienced qualitative/ intervention development researcher.

The aim of the post will be to co-develop and refine the intervention for the NIHR-funded COMbAT Fatigue research programme. The intervention will be a web-based self-management programme to support people to manage their fatigue after stroke.

The role includes undertaking and analysing focus groups and semi-structured interviews with stroke survivors, carers, clinicians and key stakeholders, as well as conducting think-aloud usability testing of the developed intervention. The role may include some travelling to conduct interviews and/or usability testing.

The role will involve working with a wide range of NHS healthcare professionals and researchers involved in behavioural medicine, stroke rehabilitation and qualitative research, as well as groups of patients and health professionals.

This is a full-time post for 20 months. The start date will be 1st April 2024.

Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  • Intervention development using an established framework (the Behaviour Change Wheel)
  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews 
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research 
  • Using advanced research methods such as intervention fidelity assessment and other process evaluation (mixed methods) approaches
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters 
  • Work with Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) groups

Person Specification:

  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a PhD relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications/ experience;
  • Self-motivated, pro-active, and able to use initiative where appropriate;
  • Experience of using qualitative data collection methods and analysis;
  • Fluency in relevant models, behaviour change techniques or methods;
  • Experience of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research;
  • Experience in the co-creation of complex behavioural interventions is desirable;
  • Experience of working with clinical populations of older adults and people with communication problems (such as aphasia) is desirable.
