Applications are invited for a full-time postdoctoral research position in the Condensed Matter Theory group of the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nottingham, to be supervised by Dr Adam Smith. The successful candidate will be working on the ERC Starting Grant project QUADCOMB “Towards a practical quantum advantage: Confronting the quantum many-body problem using quantum computers” (under the UKRI Guarantee scheme). Topics include:

  • Quantum many-body dynamics
  • Quantum algorithms
  • Quantum-enhanced numerical methods
  • Tensor networks
  • Quantum machine learning
  • Computational complexity

The main responsibility of the role is to carry out theoretical and/or computational research in quantum condensed matter theory and quantum computation, broadly understood.  The successful candidate(s) will also be expected to communicate the outcomes of the research in the form of publications and seminars. They will be an integral part of a team of researchers covering a broad range of theoretical areas including statistical physics, condensed matter theory, computational physics, quantum information, and machine learning. We seek motivated, skilled and highly independent researchers to complement our team.

Candidates should have a doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent) in physics or mathematics, or be very close to completion. A strong research record in theoretical condensed matter physics, quantum computing, or a closely related field is essential.

The start date is flexible, but candidates are expected to be in post by 1 September 2024. The position will be offered on a fixed-term contract for an initial period of 24 months, with the possibility of extension for an additional 12 months depending on funding. Hours of work are full time, 36.25 hours per week. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Adam Smith, email: [email protected]. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.

As part of our commitment to improving equality, diversity and inclusion within the school, shortlisted candidates will be given the opportunity to talk to a member of staff representing women, BAME, LGBTQIA+ or disabilities communities. This will be separate to the assessment process and will play no role in the decision to appoint.
