Position Details

Institute of Applied Health Research
Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK
Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322, with potential progression once in post to £42,792.
Grade 7 
Full Time - FTC up to 12 months

Job Summary

A Research Fellow is required to become part of a team working on a study exploring eating disorders-related content on social media, which is led by Dr Anna Lavis in the Institute of Applied Health Research at the University of Birmingham. 

Main Duties

•    Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research
•    Contribute to writing bids for research funding
•    Collect and analyse data from online ethnography on the topic of eating disorders. 
•    Apply knowledge in a way that develops new contextual understandings of the impact of eating disorders content, as well as motivations for engaging with this 
•    Maintain good working relationships with the funder, academic collaborators and a network of stakeholders
•    Disseminate research findings for publication, and in research seminars etc 
•    Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods related to analytic approaches to social media, especially online ethnography.
•    Undertake management/administration arising from the research activities, under supervision from the PI
•    Contribute to public engagement activities related to the current project, under supervision of the PI

Person Specification

•    First degree and a higher degree (or close to completion) in anthropology or a related subject. 
•    High level analytical capability
•    Ability to communicate complex information clearly
•    A good understanding of, and/or experience of conducting, ethnography is essential 
•    Experience of online ethnography, preferably in relation to a health topic, is highly desirable 
•    An interest in mental health and wellbeing is essential
•    An in-depth knowledge of social theory is essential
•    Knowledge of the clinical, psychological and/or sociological/anthropological literature on eating disorders is desirable
