Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK
Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322, with potential progression once in post to £42,792.
Grade 7 
Full Time - FTC up to 31 July 2024

Job Summary

A specialist researcher (data science and full stack software development) to create knowledge, tools for research automation, and to provide research support for projects and research groups.

Main Duties

•    Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
•    Design and develop novel personalised analytical pipelines for various epidemiological study designs using statistical models and machine learning algorithms. The work will involve creating and integrating novel methodologies for our state-of-the-art Real World Evidence platform – DExtER’s automated analytics sub-system.
•    Design and build the personalised analytical dashboard and interfaces for decision support. Candidate must have background in human computer interaction and understand the intricacies of user behaviour theory.
•    Engineer various layers of DExtER’s automated analytics infrastructure. Must have knowledge of all stages of the software development cycle. Excellent full stack design and architecture to make software scalable, generic and robust. Maintain quality and ensure responsiveness. Review and deliver changing requirements to design and launch new features. Maintain code integrity, organization, quality of the features and visual elements.
•    Provide guidance as required to staff and students who may be assisting with research specifically in relation to data extraction, analysis and drafting publication.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience 

•    A PhD in computer science or a master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent and at least 3 years’ working experience within significant healthcare field or equivalent. A good understanding of UK healthcare.
•    Display proficiency in various general-purpose programming, data visualization, statistical tools, version control and APIs libraries such as Python, R, ReactJS, SQL, Java, Git, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras. 
•    Experience in complete full stack software development. 
•    Experience in data analysis using various statistical and AI techniques including but not limited to: Survival Analysis, Multivariate Statistics, Deep Neural Networks.
•    Background in human computer interaction is preferred. 
•    Excellent research skills, scientific writing for publication.
•    Ability to effectively communicate complex technical matters in business terms. 
•    Ability to act swiftly under pressure, prioritize, and adapt to changing priorities. 
•    Strong leadership, teamwork, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
