The successful applicant will join the Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) group in the Department of Computer Science and work closely with colleagues whose research is linked to the Institute of Environment, Health and Societies. This exciting EU funded project is on the industrialisation of Additive Manufacturing (AM) that requires a holistic data management and integrated automation. This project aims to develop a new manufacturing methodology capable of ensuring the manufacturability, reliability and quality of a target metal component from initial product design via a zero-defect manufacturing approach ensuring robustness, stability and repeatability of the process. The focus of this post is on the development of a self-adaptive control for implementing non-propagation of defects strategy and also on intelligent data analytics that provides a continuous refinement by acquiring process knowledge to assist in the manufacturing of new metal components.

The Research Fellow will become part of a large and highly successful research team in the IDA group who will be the pioneers in creating new generation of highly effective and efficient and adaptive manufacturing systems that produces no defective products and no sudden breakdowns.

Applicants will be required to demonstrate their ability to think innovatively and produce solutions that will be applied and tested in multiple sites throughout UK and EU. The project will require you to take a concept and conduct a full cycle of research and development under supervision from academic staff (Prof. Zidong Wang, Prof. Xiaohui Liu and Dr. Stasha Lauria).

Your educational background should be at PhD level in related areas such as Machine Learning, Intelligent Data Analytics, Statistics Analysis, Control Engineering, Computer Vision, Mechatronics, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Production and Manufacturing Engineering. Other relevant areas will also be considered. Previous industrial experience and/or national or international scientific awards is important.

This position requires strong computing, analytical and engineering skills supported by evidence of your previous activities and responsibilities.

The key skills required:

  • Software programming (Python, C, C++, C#, .NET or Java).
  • Machine learning algorithms especially deep learning.
  • Statistics software packages.
  • Data visualization and knowledge-based systems.
  • Graphical user interface programming.
  • Control systems toolbox.
  • Sensor and actuation networks.

Experience in related industries is highly desirable and advantageous, but not essential for the post.
