Deadline: 28 Jul 2022

Technical Services (CLES)

This part time (0.6FTE) post is available immediately in Technical Services, within the College of Life and Environmental Sciences (CLES).

Summary of the role

This role will be based in the Centre for Resilience in Environment, Water and Waste (CREWW). The primary responsibility is to provide a high level of technical and lab managerial support to implement routine water and soils analysis, but also the development of novel research within Prof Richard Brazier’s research group and CREWW in general.

You will be required to have experience in managing, setting up, running and trouble-shooting using a wide range of specialised laboratory equipment, such as GC-MS and ICP-MS. In addition, you will be required to carry out method development for each of the pieces of equipment, interpretation of data and quality control. You should have experience of both quantitative and qualitative data analysis, including non-targeted MS/MS analysis (TOF and/or orbitrap experience) and the characterisation of unknown compounds. There will be a requirement for the role-holder to supervise and train new members of staff and research students working in the research group.

You will also be required to manage the provision of resources: financial; rotas; space; equipment and consumables, and will also fulfil the roles of Health and Safety Coordinator for this aspect of the CREWW laboratory space. You will thus be responsible for the day-day to operational management of part of the CREWW laboratory and staff (in liaison with CREWW lab manager) and will be expected to take a lead role in increased effectiveness and efficiency of processes and procedures to support the research objectives of the group.

We are looking for an individual with exceptional communication and time management skills, who has experience in providing professional technical support in a research laboratory environment. You must be able to work independently, using your initiative to tackle any problems, whilst also working as part of the Centre for Resilience in Environment, Water and Waste and managing a small team.
