Role Summary

The University of Birmingham sponsors one of the largest non-commercial clinical trial portfolios in the UK, including a substantial portfolio of international trials. The Research Ethics, Governance & Integrity Manager will be a senior team lead for the Research Ethics, Governance and Integrity Team in the Research Strategy and Services Division, reporting to the Assistant Director.

The role holder will be responsible for managing processes to ensure that research ethics and governance applications are processed efficiently, and University oversight is maintained throughout the life of a research project. As the expert professional lead for research ethics, governance and integrity requirements, the role holder will work in close collaboration with colleagues and students across the University’s five Colleges as well as colleagues from other Professional Services Divisions to develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure safety of research participants and the integrity research data. This will include providing expert professional leadership for research ethics / sponsorship reviews and supporting team members as the senior team lead.

Person specification

  • Experience of working in a research ethics and / or governance capacity e.g.in an NHS organisation, an academic institution or pharmaceutical company (or similar), or extensive clinical trial management (or other relevant) experience.
  • Educated to Degree level (or equivalent qualifications) and evidence of self-directed research or empathy with the research process.
  • Sound understanding of the regulatory and policy environment for research in the UK and internationally, including clinical trial regulations and compliance with the Human Tissue Act.
  • Expert knowledge of the work practices, processes and procedures relevant to the role including broader sector awareness.
  • Experience of policy development and implementation.
  • Proven ability to meet targets, milestones and contracted outputs within agreed deadlines and the ability to encourage others to do the same.
  • An understanding of the use of the web and social media for use in research.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to interact with a range of stakeholders both internal and external to the University.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail, particularly experience of interpreting and adhering to detailed and precise requirements and providing advice on the same.
  • Evidence of a high standard of written and oral English, including the ability to critique and help re-draft material effectively.
  • Evidence of highly developed IT skills, including data manipulation and presentation using the MS Office suite to support communication, analysis of information, data dissemination and project management.
  • Understanding and experience of committee organisation and minuting of high-level meetings.
  • Absolute discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
