About the role -Research Associate (RA) in Air Quality Modelling (Grade 7; Fixed-Term):

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and dedicated Research Associate (RA) until 31st January 2027 on a fixed-term, full-time (1.0 FTE) basis. The RA will undertake research into air quality modelling, with specific focus on airport-related sources for HOPE (Hydrogen Optimized multi-fuel Propulsion system for clean and silEnt aircraft), a UKRI Horizon Europe Guarantee funded project. HOPE will deliver an integrated aircraft propulsion system comprising two multi-fuel ultra-high bypass ratio turbofan engines, a fuel cell based auxiliary propulsion and power unit driving an aft boundary layer ingestion propulsor based on tubewing aircraft configuration. The successful candidate will assess the environmental impacts (specifically air quality) and societal impacts (health and cost-benefit) of HOPE systems and compare these with business-as-usual scenarios. The RA will be expected to work and liaise with experts within the HOPE Consortium.

About you:
The successful candidate will:

  • hold, or be nearing completion of, a doctoral level degree in physical/natural sciences e.g., physics, meteorology, engineering, applied mathematics,
  • possess knowledge, expertise and research experience in air quality or atmospheric modelling,
  • have practical experience in the application of air quality models (e.g., LASPORT) and Geographic Information System (e.g., QGIS).

About the department:
The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Natural Sciences that has a well-established reputation in environmental science. Our aviation research is internationally recognised and covers diverse topics such as emissions measurements and modelling, global climate impacts modelling, airport assessments (air quality, noise, environmental capacity, carbon management), sustainable aviation fuels, and climate change adaptation strategies.

The RA will have access to modern and well-equipped teaching and research facilities in the new Faculty of Science and Engineering building. In addition, the post holder will work alongside our aviation experts, and HOPE partners from the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, and Italy.
