Research Associate (Sport Science and Elite Performance)

We are recruiting a Research Associate for a 2 year fixed term post to undertake research into human fatigue in fibromyalgia syndrome, athlete development and sports technology.

You will have access to a wide range of sports performance facilities, human movement laboratories and clinical imaging for detailed investigations of athletes, patients and the general public. These facilities sit within the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and serve the wider university as a beacon for research excellence and collaboration with leading sports and health organisations locally, nationally and internationally.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • A PhD in Sport and Exercise Sciences or related discipline, or PhD thesis submitted.
  • An established track record of publishing high quality original research into fatigue and fibromyalgia syndrome in peer reviewed physiology, health or medical sciences journals. 
  • Established collaborations with international researchers in the field and with sports technology manufacturers.
  • Experience working with 3T magnetic resonance imaging and extreme environment chamber.

The successful candidate will be based in the new Institute of Sport building and will access the Platt Lane Sports Complex to develop links with a wide range of sports organisations around Greater Manchester and beyond. Our facilities also include a new Siemens 3T Magnetom Vida with a variety of dedicated coils alongside MR compatible cycle ergometry, dynamometry, neuro stimulation and EEG. We have human performance laboratories with extreme environment chamber, eye-tracking, x-ray imaging, EEG, EMG, CPET, VICON, instrumented treadmill and staircase for research aligned to our thematic areas of Sports Medicine and Elite Performance, Healthy Life-course and Movement Impairment (clinical conditions).
