Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Bristol, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime

We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate, to carry out research on image and data fusion to deliver metrics that correspond to audience experience.  The post will be based within the School of Psychological Science but will work with a larger collaborative team, including other engineers and computer scientist, developing and evaluating the latest advances in digital production for the creative industries.

This team is funded by an ambitious project called MyWorld which is a five-year programme funded by the UKRI Strength in Places fund.  The £46m programme brings together 30 partners from Bristol and Bath’s creative technologies sector and world-leading academic institutions, to create a unique cross-sector consortium.  MyWorld is forging dynamic collaborations to progress technological innovation, deliver creative excellence, establish and operate state of the art facilities, offer skills training and drive inward investment.

Within MyWorld our team is focused on measuring and evaluating audience experiences. There exists a range of methods to measure audience responses from physiological and behavioral recording to filming audience members using IR, thermal and visible spectrum cameras. We are working over a range of experiences (TV, VR, AR, Live Theater, etc.) and with differing types of content (drama, documentary, news). Within this role you will be working with these multi-sensor data to identify signatures of audience engagement and response.  This will involve using motion and person tracking, data-fusion and machine learning.

The aim is to have a real impact by providing the creative industries with an easy to access toolkit to support audience understanding. The team will be based across Bristol and Bath Universities and work directly with the creative sector in the region.

We are seeking a person with a passion for complex real-world problems that require the application of computational methods. The person will have, or be close to having, a PhD in computer science, signal processing or related topics and strong scientific programming skills Research experience in image data fusion, machine-learning, face or person tracking, AI, vision science, handling large data sets would all be desirable.  Due to the interdisciplinary nature of this work, applicants with a different scientific background but a strong interest in this field will also be considered.

Informal enquires about this post are very welcome, please contact Professor Iain Gilchrist, email: [email protected] .

It is anticipated that interviews will be held on Thursday 7th March 2024.

We recently launched our strategy  to 2030 tying together our mission, vision and values.

The University of Bristol aims to be a place where everyone feels able to be themselves and do their best in an inclusive working environment where all colleagues can thrive and reach their full potential. We want to attract, develop, and retain individuals with different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives – particularly people of colour, LGBT+ and disabled people - because diversity of people and ideas remains integral to our excellence as a global civic institution.
