Research Associate / Senior Research Associate - Land-based Climate Mitigation and Monitoring Reporting and Verification

An enticing opportunity awaits at the University of Bristol as we search for a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate to engage in two funded research projects focused on Land-based Climate Mitigation and Monitoring Reporting and Verification (MRV) of Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR)/Carbon Dioxide Removal. The position offers flexibility with negotiable full/part-time options and adaptable working hours. This is an open-ended position with fixed funding until February 2026. The role is set to commence as soon as possible, ideally by March/April 2024 and will conclude by February 2026.

  • Review and Innovate: Contribute to a comprehensive review of existing MRV approaches for GGR, actively participating in the development of a cutting-edge UK evaluation framework that encompasses climate, environmental, and socio-economic outcomes.
  • Shape Forest Monitoring: Play a pivotal role in the development of a sophisticated European forest monitoring and carbon reporting system. This includes integrating valuable data on biodiversity and other crucial forest ecosystem services.
  • Bridge Gaps and Enhance Methods: Help identify gaps and explore innovative methods to harmonise and enhance various approaches to MRV.
  • Data Mastery: Assist in collecting, collating, and analysing intricate qualitative and/or quantitative data from a diverse range of primary and secondary sources.
  • Influence Policy and Practice: Contribute to impactful recommendations for policy and practice, actively participating in the creation of academic publications and presentations that shape the conversation in the field.
  • Explore Opportunities: Embrace opportunities for research visits and policy secondments in the UK and EU.

Research Associate (Level I):

  • A good honours degree (or equivalent) in the relevant area.
  • Some research experience.
  • Excellent team skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Research skills contributing to key research strands and academic papers.
  • Strong organisational skills. 
  • Self-directed independence skills.
  • A desire to work in an interdisciplinary research setting.

Senior Research Associate (Level J):

  • A relevant postgraduate taught/research degree
  • PhD level or equivalent professional experience in the research area.
  • Excellent team skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Research skills leading key research strands and academic papers.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Self-directed independence skills.
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary research setting, including experience working with policy and other stakeholders.
