Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in Mathematical and Statistical Modelling of Infectious Disease
The role
We have an excellent opportunity for postdoctoral researcher(s) who are ready to advance their career in infectious disease modelling. We are looking for motivated research scientists to join our growing team of infectious disease modellers and statisticians in the Department of Engineering Mathematics and the Bristol Vaccine Centre (BVC) at the University of Bristol.
The post will have a focus on understanding the spread and severity of respiratory infections including pneumococcus, RSV and COVID-19. A major part of the role will be to support the design, implementation and analysis of infectious disease surveillance studies, and to quantify the effect of vaccines.
You will be working closely with leading scientists in vaccine trials (Prof Adam Finn) and infectious disease transmission modelling and data analysis (Dr Leon Danon) in an interdisciplinary role. This is an exceptional opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research on highly policy relevant studies.
What will you be doing?
- You will take a lead role in extracting actionable insights from multiple clinical studies being run within the Bristol Vaccine Centre through quantitative analysis.
- A key component of this post is to develop and apply cutting edge quantitative methods for analysis of infectious diseases, and/or mathematical modelling of infectious disease processes.
- You will undertake literature reviews and appropriate statistical analyses to inform the most appropriate structure and parameterisation of mathematical or statistical models.
- You will be responsible for communicating key findings to stakeholders that include funders and policy makers, and take the lead in writing high impact research papers.
You should apply if
You will have either a statistical background with experience in clinical trial design and analysis, a background in mathematical modelling of infectious diseases, or a background in health economics research.
A keen interest in public health and biological and epidemiological processes is essential.

Salary: £37,099 - £41,732 Grade I; £41,732 - £46,974 Grade J, per annum, pro rata for part time
