Research Associate/Senior Research Associate in in-situ structural Cell Biology

This position will focus on the development of improved methodology in high pressure freezing for in-situ structural Cell Biology, where molecules are now placed in its physiological context in cells, organoids, and tissues. This is achieved through imaging of cryo-preserved samples while maintaining samples in their native state. It is important to emphasise that the critical first step in this workflow is always Cryo preservation, a technique that requires critical development to fully support the demands of the cryo-EM field. This Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) funded project allows us to address some of the issues and develop new tools and workflows to improve the success rate for HPF. The project will focus on cells grown directly on EM grids adapting the “waffle” method but there is scope to look at HPF technology in general.

This vacancy is for a 1 FTE position.   This would be subject to our Flexible working policy .

You will be responsible for performing electron microscopy experiments, from preparing samples to analysis, both TEM and SEM based.


Standard Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the effective execution of EM experiments performed as part of the research carried out in the Verkade research group.
  • Develop and maintain familiarity with the project aims and an awareness of the research area.
  • Collate and report on research or project outputs as required compiling or writing initial versions of communications and reports.
  • Plan and organise own work activities as well as support those of others to ensure that deadlines are met.
  • Work in partnership with key (internal and external) stakeholders to co-ordinate resource allocation, work scheduling and provide advice and support to all staff and students linked to the project and Verkade research group. 

You have:

  • A BSc or equivalent in a relevant field, plus experience in a relevant role, or significant relevant work experience.
  • A PhD or near completion, or equivalent research experience in an academic, industrial or clinical setting equivalent to a PhD.
  • Experimental experience and knowledge of the field of Biomedical Electron Microscopy.
  • Experience with biological sample preparation using high pressure freezing is highly desirable.
  • Proven planning and organising skills. Able to manage conflicting deadlines, non-routine and urgent events.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to take ownership of problems and find solutions and build relationships and interact effectively at all levels and with a wide range of internal and external contacts.
  • Self-motivated able to work autonomously and to deadlines as well as ability to contribute as team member, motivating and advising others to schedule/deliver project deadlines.
  • Flexible, adaptable and collaborative approach.

Contract type: Open-ended (Fixed term funding until 31/08/2028)

Work pattern: 100% time

Grade: I or J

Salary: £39,906 - £44,746 (Grade I) / £44, 746 - £50,253 (Grade J) per annum (depending on experience and expertise)
