Research Associate Low-Carbon Reorientation in Steel, Oil Refining and Chemical Industries

Updated: over 2 years ago
Location: Manchester, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 16 Nov 2021

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate in the field of innovation studies. You will be based in the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research at the University of Manchester, where you will join a vibrant team of social science researchers working on innovation, low-carbon transitions, and industrial reorientation.

The 21-month post is part of a 2-year research project, titled: “Low-carbon reorientation in steel, oil refining and chemical industries”. The project is funded by and part of the 4-year Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC), which aims to support the governments industrial decarbonisation strategy. The University of Manchester is looking to recruit a Research Associate to undertake research within this project, which will investigate low-carbon reorientation processes in steel, oil refining and chemical industries, which account for about 40% of UK industrial GHG emissions. This project will address the following research questions:

  • What are the barriers and drivers of low-carbon reorientation in these three industries?
  • Conceptualising low-carbon reorientation as a gradual multi-phase process, in what reorientation phase are these three industries?
  • How and why do steel, oil refining and chemical industries vary in their depth and speed of low-carbon reorientation? How might decarbonisation efforts be accelerated?
  • To address these questions, the project will make three longitudinal case studies that analyze co-evolving interactions between the steel, oil refining and chemical industries and their contexts from 2005 to the present. Data will be collected from different sources, including industry journals, policy documents, expert interviews, statistical databases, and secondary sources (e.g., academic publications, consultancy reports).

Based at the Alliance Manchester Business School, the successful candidate will work directly with the supervisors from the University and with other researchers and practitioners within the wider IDRIC project.

Candidates should be educated to PhD level within the field of innovation studies, or business and management (with a focus on innovation or strategic reorientation). They should be able to demonstrate familiarity with the literatures on low-carbon transitions, reorientation of incumbent firms, and radical innovation/technological discontinuities and have experience in case study methods, including interviews.

The closing date for applications will be as per the online advertisement with interviews planned soon after. The post would start as soon as possible after interviews.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
