Job summary
We are looking for a Research Associate to work on developing next generation plasma-based accelerators in the John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science.
The post holder will primarily be responsible for the development of a GeV laser driven accelerator using the PW laser at ELI-ALPS. The post holder will also support the team’s laser and accelerator developments in the Blackett Laboratory, and at other national and international facilities.
Duties and responsibilities
You will be responsible for the delivery of a working GeV plasma accelerator at ELI-ALPS.
You will be expected to help produce independent and original research, submit publications to refereed journals and help with the administration of the research group.
The work typically would involve a high degree of teamwork and interdisciplinary research.
You will have the opportunity to voluntarily undertake limited teaching duties in joint agreement with the Department of Physics. It is expected that you will use the position to develop your track record and research independence.
Essential requirements
- PhD (or equivalent) in the field of laser plasma acceleration, high-intensity laser development or other high intensity laser-matter interactions.
- Experience in developing plasma targetry or high intensity laser systems
- Experience operating and developing laser and plasma diagnostics
- A strong background in accelerator, plasma or laser physics
- Evidence of the ability to carry out original research and to produce scientific research papers

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694 - £39,888 per annum
