Research Associate in Kinetic Inductance Detector Development

The Astronomy Instrumentation Group at Cardiff University is seeking applications to fill the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate.

The research associate will work with a team of researchers developing arrays of Kinetic Inductance Detectors and optical coupling components for both astronomy and commercial applications.

This research will include the development of both the detector and associated focal plane components including superconducting filters and antennas for mm/submm imaging and spectroscopy, with a particular focus on future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments

Importantly, this research will involve growing our fabrication capability at Cardiff through liaising with inhouse cleanroom process engineers to develop the processing techniques required to produce the next generation of large format, multi-chroic and polarisation sensitive detector arrays.   

The research associate will work within the active and diverse Astronomy Instrumentation Group (AIG) at Cardiff. The AIG has a rich heritage in the area of mm and submm instrumentation, making considerable contributions to many high-profile ground, balloon and space-based experiments.

The research associate will also work in close collaboration with colleagues from one of our industrial partners – Sequestim to develop focal planes for the next generation airport security scanners.  

The role will be to undertake research tasks supporting a number of projects within the Astronomy Instrumentation group at Cardiff University.

The post is full-time, fixed term for 18 months and available from 1st October 2020.

Salary: £33,797 - £40,322 per annum (Grade 6)
