The Department of Materials wishes to appoint a Research Associate in Innovative Biomaterials who would work on engineering biomaterials that elicit desired biological responses and developing state-ofthe-art biomaterials characterisation techniques. The elucidation of the interfaces between materials and biological environments is an extremely important aspect of generating high impact materials-based approaches for healthcare applications.
The post-holder will design and fabricate innovative biomaterials to expand our portfolio and will apply spectroscopy and high-resolution microscopy to understand a variety of factors that define the biomaterial interaction, for example surface modification and topographical cues. The post-holder will be active within a vibrant and multidisciplinary environment comprising multiple projects. This post will liaise closely with researchers trained in a wide array of faculties, including nanomaterials, engineering, as well as biology (with focus areas in drug delivery, tissue engineering and diagnostics).
The Research Associate in Innovative Biomaterials would be assisting with the design, synthesis and fabrication of innovative micro/nanoparticles and peptide-based materials for drug delivery, regenerative medicine and biosensing applications. They will develop state-of-the-art materials characterisation techniques to analyse the materials and biointerfaces. The post holder will establish versatile characterisation protocols that can be translated to a variety of applications and will undertake the associated data analysis and interpretation.
You will be a conscientious, innovative experimental scientist who has successfully completed a PhD (or equivalent) in in Biomaterials Characterisation/Preparation, or similar, with experience in physicochemical characterisation techniques (e.g. spectroscopy, Raman, SAXS) and in microscopy characterisation techniques (e.g. TEM, SEM and/or AFM) and image analysis software (e.g. ImageJ). The candidate must have experience in writing papers focusing on on biomaterials development and characterisation, including a number of first-authored papers in well-respected journals.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477- £38,566 per annum.
