We would like to recruit a researcher with experience of developing and deploying tangible computer devices and data gathering systems for research into the development of data science insights in school curricula. Accordingly, the post will require knowledge and experience of how new devices and sensors can generate representational data resources, and beyond this, familiarity with the relationship between data derived insights and larger change agendas.

You will work within the Future Places Project, the FPC. This is an EPSRC research centre project which seeks to exploit prior research on pervasive computing, the IoT, the natural environment and data science, to inform understanding of how to design, develop, experience and live in the places of the future. It has an especial concern with Morecambe Bay and its environs. Its thematic concerns include healthy living, the built environment, and the natural environment.

You will be expected to write and submit high-quality research papers, disseminate research results by giving talks and tutorials at conferences and other institutions, assist with preparing grant proposals, and undertake other research activities as needed.

Graduate training in computer science or related fields (such as data science or HCI) is necessary for this position as is experience of working with data in real world (i.e., non-scientific) contexts. Experience of dealing with people and complex organizational interfaces would also be a benefit. Ideally the applicant will have a track record of high-quality report writing and publications in areas of relevance to the project.  For more details, please see the detailed Person Specification for this position.

You will be under the supervision of Professor Richard Harper, who is Principal Investigator of the FPC, Professor of HCI in the School of Computing and Communications.

The position will be available immediately, and will conclude at the end of this calendar year, December, 2024. Continuation thereafter will be contingent on external funding.

Interested candidates should contact Professor Richard Harper for informal inquiries ([email protected] ).
