Updated: over 2 years ago
Location: Bath, ENGLAND
Job Type: Permanent
Deadline: 15 Nov 2021

We have an exciting research opportunity for a passionate and adventurous researcher wanting to demonstrate their skills in advancing an exotic patterning technique for manufacturing advanced biomedical devices. This interdisciplinary project will involve machine learning, polymer science, and materials characterisation. It will be based in Dr Bernardo Castro-Dominguez’s group (Smart Process Engineering Lab ) in the Chemical Engineering Department and the Centre for Sustainable and Circular Technologies (www.csct.ac.uk) at the University of Bath. The project will require collaboration with members of the Materials for Health Lab,  Centre for Autonomous Robotics (CENTAUR) and the Centre for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI), industrial partners and clinicians.

About the role

BioMed 4.0 is an exciting and ground-breaking EPSRC-funded project that will deliver the next generation of additive manufacturing devices by enabling an agnostic-to-feedstock operation, high printing precision and control, and hierarchical design (from the centimetre down to the nanoscale) to produce biomedical devices. In this 2-year long post, using machine learning and novel in-line characterisation technologies, we will build a novel smart 3D printing technology that will adapt to a wide range of feedstocks.

Expertise in machine learning and a programming language such as C/C++, Python, MATLAB or FORTRAN is crucial. Successful applicants will possess:

  • A strong background in machine learning and developing data-driven models.
  • Some experience in spectroscopy, and materials characterisation technologies (e.g., NIR, Raman, PAT) or 3D printing, electrospinning/electrospraying.
  • A track record in conducting high quality research, evidenced by publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams are crucial.
