Duties and Responsibilities
The UCL Division of Medicine is a major biomedical research centre and a leader in medical and health research, bringing together clinical and basic scientists undertaking world-leading interdisciplinary research, teaching and patient-care. The Division is part of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, one of the four UCL Faculties that create the UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences, which is one of the largest and most renowned groupings of academics in biomedical, life and population health sciences (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/slms/ ). These factors combine to provide an exceptional environment in which to pursue basic, translational and clinical research programmes.
The position is available from September 2017 in the laboratory of Dr Richard Day (Applied Biomedical Engineering Group; http://www.ucl.ac.uk/day-lab ) to develop and characterize a novel biomaterial-based approach for therapeutic neovascularization. The project is funded by the British Heart Foundation and the post holder will work closely with project co-investigators at the University of Bristol, led by Prof. Paolo Madeddu in the Section of Regenerative Medicine, School of Medicine, University of Bristol.

This post is funded for 28 months in the first instance.
The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team manufacturing and characterizing microparticles containing hierarchical topographical features that will involve materials characterization, cell biology and pre-clinical testing. Key skills required of the post holder are polymer chemistry, materials characterization, cell culture, biochemistry, and pre-clinical potency testing. Necessary training in specialist techniques will be provided; the main criterion for this role is enthusiasm and an innovative approach to problem solving.
The successful applicant should have a PhD in materials science, biomedical engineering, or life science discipline and a knowledge of cell biology is essential.
