Job description
Job summary
The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Analytical Chemistry who is experienced in advanced instrumental methods to work on an exciting project in trace species determination. Working closely with a major international company, you will take the lead in identifying, at trace levels, critical organo-inorganic contaminants in crude oil which lead to corrosion within the process plant. You will be a member of a small team working at Imperial College and with our industrial partner on the project. Some overseas travel to meet with our industrial partners will be required.
Duties and responsibilities
To carry out a research programme in analytical chemistry with the task of identifying, at trace levels, critical organo-inorganic contaminants which lead to corrosion within the process plant. These species will likely be present at ppm levels, or lower, in differing process fluids, but most importantly in crude oil and crude oil fractions. The key task is both identification and quantification of these trace species.
Essential requirements
- To identify, at trace levels, critical organo-inorganic contaminants which lead to corrosion within the process plant. These species will likely be present at ppm levels, or lower, in differing process fluids, but most importantly in crude oil and crude oil fractions.
- Experienced in analysing very complex liquid mixtures, such as crude oil, using techniques such as ICP-MS, GC-MS, LC-MS, LC-MS-MS and Monochromatic Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry
- Operate advanced analytical equipment for species identification, developing complex experimental methods for those instruments
- To write reports for submission to research sponsors
- To present findings to colleagues and at conferences
- To submit publications to refereed journals
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 – £43,888 per annum.
