Job summary

Imperial College London's National Heart and Lung Institute seeks a Research Software Engineer to join the Cardiac Electro-Mechanics Research Group (www.cemrg.com). This role involves developing algorithms, methods and a user interface (GUI) for image analysis, creating human heart models, and analysis of diagnostic data analysis (www.cemrgapp.com). The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with a team of developers, remote and local cardiologists and algorithm developers. Our software is used in the EU, US and Australia providing an exciting opportunity to work with global teams and rapidly translate software into clinical research and impact.  


Duties and responsibilities

In Cardiac Electro-Mechanics Research Group you will:  

  • Collaborate with a team of developers to design and implement software for medical image analysis, and modelling and simulating the heart.
  • Apply advanced techniques in image analysis, neural networks, and mesh operations to develop accurate algorithms for image analysis and simulating human hearts.
  • Work closely with medical imaging and diagnostic datasets to extract essential information required for detailed heart analysis and simulations.
  • Contribute to refining and improving existing software tools, ensuring robustness, efficiency, and accuracy in simulating the heart.

Essential requirements

  • Hold a PhD in applied mathematics, engineering, computer science or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience

  • Or Bachelor's or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field.*



  • Proficiency in software collaborative development, particularly in GUI design, algorithm development, containers, github, and continuous development.

  • Experience with machine learning libraries (PyTorch, Tensorflow or keras) are desirable

  • Experience with image processing, neural networks, and mesh operations.

  • Strong understanding of medical imaging and diagnostic datasets and formats.

  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills within a team-oriented environment.

This is a fulltime, fixed term role based at Hammersmith Campus (East Acton).

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 - £43,888 per annum.

This project is about developing open-source software that will be used internationally by clinicians and engineers for impactful healthcare research.  The post is full time and fixed term for 2 years, and is based in the ICTEM Building at Hammersmith Campus, west London. Candidates are required to complete the application online.
