Job summary

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research fellow in the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College London.  The 18 month post is funded by GSK to investigate the role of IL-5 in suppressing anti-viral immunity in bronchial epithelial cells and blood monocytes/dendritic cells in asthma. You will be based within the Airway Diseases Section where you will be part of the multidisciplinary research team led by Professor Sebastian Johnston

Brief description of Research to study the role of IL-5 in suppressing anti-viral immunity (innate immune responses) in primary bronchial epithelial cells (submerged and ALI culture) and blood monocytes/dendritic cells in asthma.

We are looking for an ambitious and motivated postdoc with a background in virology and innate anti-viral immunity in asthma.


Duties and responsibilities

  • To execute the above study to the highest standards.



  • Actively participate in the research programme of the lab, work collaboratively, and supervise academic trainees



  • You will be encouraged to present at national and international scientific meetings, publish in high quality journals, attract funding and career development.


Essential requirements

  • PhD in virology, immunology or other relevant field.

  • Practical experience in rhinovirus virology, innate anti-viral immunity, primary cell culture, flow cytometry, cell purification, molecular biology.

Further information

This is a Fulltime, fixed term role based at St Mary’s Campus (Paddington).

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 - £43,888 per annum.

Hybrid working may be considered for this role.  Staff working in roles that are suitable for hybrid working will normally be expected to work 60% of their time onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
