Just Earth Observation for Conservation is a £2.5 million research project, funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC), focused on understanding the justice implications of the increased use of earth observation (EO) technologies such as satellites and drones in biodiversity conservation. Over the course of 5 years, JEO4C’s aim is to transform understanding of the conservation ‘datascape’ and co-develop strategies by which remote sensing can support conservation which is both ecologically impactful and socially just. The project will work intensively in four conservation landscapes in the UK, Spain, Guatemala, and Kenya, while developing recommendations to reshape global best practice on data-driven conservation.

As part of JEO4C’s work, we are seeking to appoint a long-term (4 years, flexible start in early to mid 2024) post-doctoral research associate based in the Global Development Institute (GDI) at the University of Manchester.
