MRC Epidemiology Unit & Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR)

Postdoctoral Research Associate: Diet and Eating Behaviours across Early Adulthood Transitions (DEBEAT)

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work on a new cohort study which will investigate the development of diet and related lifestyle behaviours across the life transitions of early adulthood. This will be a 4-year position, to start in Sept/Oct 2021, based in the Behavioural Epidemiology and Interventions in Young People Programme at the MRC Epidemiology Unit. The successful candidate will play a central role in the design, set-up and running of this new cohort as well as conducting analysis to address research questions. This opportunity would suit an ambitious researcher with recent experience working with adolescents or young adults, a passion for methods development, and an aptitude for advanced quantitative analysis.

The DEBEAT study will recruit a cohort of 1,500 adolescents in their final year of school and follow them over the subsequent year to study changes in their diet, eating behaviours, and related lifestyle behaviours. It aims to understand how the changing exposures as young people transition from school-level education to further education or employment influence the development of adult diet and lifestyle behaviours. You will work closely with the project lead, Dr Eleanor Winpenny, contributing to all stages of the research: study design, data collection, analysis, publication and presentation of findings.

Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant discipline (or due to submit within 4 months of application). You will have a strong interest in understanding the determinants of diet and related lifestyle behaviours, and the tenacity to develop and manage a large study of a challenging population.

Starting date: September/October 2021.

For informal discussions please contact Dr Eleanor Winpenny by email:

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 4 years, or until 30th September 2025, depending on the start date.
