A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available within the group of Professors Fiona Gribble and Frank Reimann at the Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS), focussing on the gut-brain-pancreatic axis and its role in the control of insulin secretion and food intake. The group has a particular interest in developing gut peptide based strategies for treating type 2 diabetes and obesity. Supported by the Wellcome Trust, this post will involve the use of patch clamp electrophysiology to study nutrient sensing pathways in human enteroendocrine cells using genetically modified intestinal organoid cultures.
Scientists with substantial experience in patch clamp electrophysiology, particularly of endocrine cell types, are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a background in studying the gut-brain-pancreatic axis or related metabolic physiology. The role holder will be responsible for running their own electrophysiology research projects and will also provide electrophysiological support and training for other members of the group.
- Perform patch clamp electrophysiological recordings of fluorescently-labelled endocrine cells in intestinal organoid cultures
- Maintain organoid cultures
- Genetically modify organoids e.g. to label new cell types or generate knockout lines by CRISPR-Cas9
- Perform Ca2+ imaging, flow cytometry, single cell RNAseq, and other techniques according to the direction of the project and candidate's interests
- Present research work and data within the Institute, nationally and internationally and prepare and submit research for publication in peer-reviewed journals
- Assist in providing instruction to postgraduate students and other members of the research group in electrophysiology techniques
- Assist the Principal Investigators in preparing manuscripts and applications to funding bodies
