We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate/Fellow to support the Midlands Innovation TALENT programme – a £5M investment supported by Research England and partners that aims to advance status and opportunity for the technical community in UK Higher Education.

This is a unique opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary team to build knowledge and understanding of the technical community in UK Higher Education and to develop and influence policy and practice.

Midlands Innovation’s £5M TALENT programme, announced by the Science Minister in February 2020, is the largest ever investment into technicians in higher education, whose specialist skills often go unrecognised despite the crucial role they play in the success of universities and the growth of the UK economy.

The TALENT programme will advance the understanding of the higher education sector's future needs for skilled technicians, deliver culture change around the technician's role in research, knowledge exchange and equipment sharing and greatly strengthen the provision and content of training available to technical staff across UK higher education and research.

A key component of the TALENT programme is the TALENT Commission, published on 1 February 2022, looking at the future technical skills needs of UK higher education. The role holder will support the critical dissemination of the report findings through open-access sources, events, speaker slots and meetings, ensuring wide dissemination with a focus on universities, policy makers and research funders.

The role will also support culture change projects within TALENT, collecting data and building understanding of the Midlands Innovation technical workforce relating to EDI; research culture; the technicians’ role in knowledge transfer and collaboration; and technical representation within decision making structures within universities.

We welcome applications from recent PhD graduates, applicants close to completion of a PhD, and those with postdoctoral experience. We also welcome applicants with an equivalent track-record of professional work experience in relevant organisations or practice.

This role is fixed term to 29th February 2024. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours); however, applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 29 hours per week). Please specify in your application if you wish to work part time and the number of preferred hours. Arrangements for job share would be considered.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Kelly Vere ([email protected] ). Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted. Additional information on TALENT can be found at https://www.mitalent.ac.uk/Home
