The Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre (SPMIC), University of Nottingham is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral research fellow in the field of magnetoencephalography (MEG). This is part of a broad programme across a number of areas of research whose aim is to develop a new generation of MEG system based upon optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs). The position will be located at SPMIC, and will work with researchers from within UoN and a wide range of external collaborating organisations both within the UK and internationally.
Optically pumped magnetometers are ultra-sensitive magnetic field detectors which can operate without cryogenic cooling, and so can be brought closer to the head than conventional field detectors. The aim is to build a multi-channel OPM MEG device which can be worn on the head allowing the subject to move freely in an open and natural environment. The prospect of an affordable and wearable system has a number of exciting applications including novel paediatric imaging.
The successful candidate(s) must have or be nearing completion of a Ph.D. in physics, engineering or an associated area. Candidates should be experienced in hardware and software development for MEG systems. Experience in programming using Matlab and/or Python is highly desirable. Also experience in the field of MEG experimental design, MEG array design, and paediatric and/or clinical imaging is desirable.
The University of Nottingham has been at the forefront of imaging since the 1970’s and a rich history of novel developments resulted in the award of a Nobel Prize to Sir Peter Mansfield. The Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre remains at the forefront of neuroimaging development with significant contributions in the fields of MRI, MEG, multi-modal imaging, and simultaneous EEG/fMRI. The Centre is equipped with a 275 channel MEG, 7T, 3T and 1.5T MR systems, as well as MR-compatible 64-channel EEG. It also houses the world’s first 50 channel wearable MEG device based on OPMs.
