As part of an exciting new partnership between University of Nottingham, University of Strathclyde and GSK, we are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic Research Associate/Fellow within the research group of Professor Michael Stocks based in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham.
This role will involve the development of a medicinal chemistry research project founded upon excellence in synthetic (medicinal) chemistry aimed at supporting an artificial intelligence (AI) enabled medicinal chemistry program. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with an AI computational chemist to explore the proof-of-concept chemical synthesis of new lead- and drug-like chemical scaffolds, enabling the synthesis of the scaffold and the expansion of the scaffolds into small “drug-like” libraries. An essential aspect of the research will be the validation of synthetic chemistry reactions to expedite the generation of compound libraries, through short-term secondment access to GSK’s high throughput chemistry expertise. This position is part of a recently announced EPSRC Prosperity Partnership award entitled “Accelerated Discovery and Development of New Medicines: Prosperity Partnership for a Healthier Nation” (EP/S005080/1), which will support a multidisciplinary team of approx. 30 co-workers all of whom are committed to the development of smarter chemistries to underpin efficient processes enabling the manufacture of high potency materials with a minimal environmental impact.
It is expected that the successful candidate with work closely with researchers at The University of Strathclyde and GSK with an opportunity to undertake secondments to one or both of our partner institutions. We pride ourselves on the collegial and supportive culture created by our staff. We are dedicated to creating an environment which enables both our staff to thrive and achieve their potential. Our commitment to Equality and Diversity has been recognised in the awarding of an Athena SWAN Silver Award .
To be suitable for this post, you must be genuinely interested in pursuing a future career in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. You must have a good first degree in a synthetic chemistry-related discipline (min 2(i)), a PhD submitted or awarded in synthetic (medicinal) chemistry and a proven research track record. You must have excellent communication skills, which are evident from written reports and publications, as well as presentations and discussions. In addition, you are an effective team member.
Industrial pharmaceutical experience in a synthetic medicinal chemistry group is desirable.
The post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 9 months. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours). Job share arrangements may be considered.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Michael Stocks, School of Pharmacy, tel: 0115 8466863 or Email: [email protected]. Please note that applications sent directly to this Email address will not be accepted.
