Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate/Fellow in University of Nottingham Food Flavour Group led by Professor Ian Fisk and Dr Nicole Yang, based at the Sutton Bonington Campus. The successful applicant will work within a research project funded by BBSRC-TRDF: Transformative Research Technologies, in partnership with Rothamsted Research (Dr John Caulfield and Dr Jozsef Vuts). University of Nottingham supervisors are Professor Ian Fisk and Dr Nicole Yang.

The overall aim of this project is to demonstrate the proof-of-concept of a hyphenated machine vision and physical sensor system. This novel, cutting-edge, real-time detection technology, when combined with advanced statistical modelling based on machine learning, will find and explain associations between the volatile profiles and sensitive spectral information from bean plants (Vicia faba) under different biotic stressor conditions (pest insects and plant pathogens).

The successful candidate will be expected to develop optimised analytical methods for aroma analysis (APCI-MS, e-Nose) and NIR imaging (hyperspectral imaging) through collaboration with Rothamsted. The candidate needs to prepare accurate, high-quality experimental data, which will also be suitable for high-impact international journals.

A PhD, or close to completion, in Food/Plant Science or analytical-related subject is essential for this role.

This full-time position will start on the 01 January 2022 and is offered on a fixed-term contract for 12 months (100% FTE). Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours) but part time (70% FTE) will be considered. Job share arrangements may be considered.
