Research Associate/Fellow in Dementia and Hearing Loss (Fixed term, Part time)

Salary: £27924 to £34304 per annum, pro rata depending on skills and experience (minimum £31406 with relevant PhD).

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate/Fellow within a multi-disciplinary team at the University of Nottingham, based in Hearing Sciences at the NIHR Nottingham BRC, in collaboration with the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). Hearing Sciences is led by internationally recognised senior scientists whose research spans basic auditory neuroscience to applied clinical research. The IMH is a leading institute for mental health and dementia research in the UK.

The postholder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of a dementia and hearing study. Hearing loss is a major potentially reversible contributor to dementia risk. Understanding and managing dementia and hearing loss are growing priorities for research and practice. However, people living with these conditions, especially members of under-served/minority groups, often encounter barriers to participation in research. This study will develop a toolkit of strategies to improve their inclusion in research. 

 The postholder will plan and conduct this research using appropriate approaches, methodologies, and techniques. They will build links with stakeholders (e.g. clinicians, patients) from key organisations (e.g. charities, support groups), who will co-design the toolkit. They will disseminate the research via journals and conferences. They will have opportunities to identify new research areas, develop professional skills, and extend their research portfolio within the NIHR Nottingham BRC remit. The NIHR Nottingham BRC benefits from high-quality testing facilities and established links across the university and the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, in addition to dedicated staff and resources via the NIHR Clinical Research Facility and NIHR Clinical Research Network.

Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline or be near to completion for Associate level. They should possess the following: excellent qualitative research skills, excellent working knowledge of relevant IT operating systems and software packages (e.g. Windows, Microsoft Office), good database and data management skills, excellent organisation abilities, and strong communication skills, including an ability to engage various audiences/disciplines. They should be willing to travel to local research sites for recruitment and data collection as required.

This post is available from 1st August 2022 and is offered on a fixed-term contract for 12 months. It is part-time (29 hours per week). Job share arrangements may be considered.
