Applications are invited for a researcher to conduct multiphase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling for aerospace applications. For the successful candidate this will provide an exciting opportunity to be part of delivering key technical advancements to the aerospace sector that will advance knowledge of ultra-efficient propulsion systems for short and short-medium range aircraft.

The successful candidate will join the Mechanical and Aerospace Systems (MAS) Research Group within the Faculty of Engineering as part of a team of researchers involved in CFD modelling activities across a wide range of project and application areas.   The candidate will develop novel numerical models for the simulation of liquid films in sheared flows. This may involve implementing algorithms to include effects such as heat transfer, film aeration and interfacial turbulence. The candidate will liaise with world-leading experimentalists within the University of Nottingham and will be responsible for interrogating experimental data in order to develop and validate correlations and low fidelity models for use in CFD.

Candidates must have or be near completion of a PhD in engineering, applied mathematics or a related subject area, with a major component in using Computational Fluid Dynamics. Essential skills that the successful candidate will possess include: effective collaborative working in a multi-disciplinary environment; creative thinking and problem solving; and the ability to clearly communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences.  They are also expected to have experience of model implementation in a widely available CFD simulation tool such as OpenFOAM, ANSYS Fluent or Siemens STAR-CCM+. Programming experience, a strong foundation in multiphase flows, fluid mechanics and turbulence, and experience with related numerical methods and corresponding experimental techniques such as PIV or BBLIF are all strongly desirable for this role.

This is a full-time (36.25 hours), fixed-term post of 24 months. Arrangements for job share may be considered. Please note that a Basic BPSS check is required for the successful candidate.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham has an excellent international reputation for high quality theoretical and experimental research funded by EU, EPSRC, BEIS, Innovate-UK and directly with industry. The faculty is also dedicated to equality, diversity, and inclusion; it was awarded engineering department in the UK to be awarded an Athena Swan Gold award for advancing gender equality in higher education. Applications from all backgrounds are encouraged.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Stephen Ambrose, by email [email protected] Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
