The Pilgrim Group is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and skilled synthetic chemist for a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow post for a period of 12 months, based in the School of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a new and dynamic research group. The successful candidate will investigate the synthesis of new functional metal-organic cages. We are interested in developing these systems for use in catalysis and to aid the isolation and study of reactive intermediates. We are also developing new classes of stimuli-responsive metal-organic cages and those able to give multi modal readouts for various sensing applications.

Candidates must have either already obtained a PhD in supramolecular chemistry, organic chemistry, or a related discipline, or have submitted their thesis prior to starting. They should also be a skilled synthetic chemist, with expertise in the synthesis, purification, and characterisation of organic molecules. Candidates should have excellent organisational, communication and team working skills and be comfortable supervising junior researchers.

In 2021-22, the Pilgrim group is expected to consist of six PhD students and three MSci students. In addition to pursuing their own project, the successful candidate will have delegated responsibility for safe laboratory practice and contribute to the smooth running of the wider group via the instruction and day-to-day supervision of co-workers. They will also aid Dr Pilgrim in publication and grant writing activities. The successful candidate will also be given the help and freedom to develop their own research ideas. Hence, this position may be particularly attractive to those looking to develop their research independence and leadership skills, and those of a strong creative background. We are strong advocates of public engagement and the successful candidate should want to aid these endeavours. They will also be able to undertake a small amount of teaching (e.g., tutorials) if desired.

Candidates should complete the application form answering how they fulfil the criteria in the role profile.

This role is available on a fixed term basis for 12 months, it is available to start on the 1st October 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours). Job share arrangements may be considered.

The University of Nottingham is an equal opportunities employer, and the Pilgrim Group particularly welcomes applications from candidates with backgrounds traditionally under-represented in academia.
