The O’Neill Group is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and skilled researcher for a Research Associate/Fellow post in Biological Chemistry for a period of 12 months, based in the Biodiscovery Institute at the University of Nottingham, UK, with 3 months of this time based at Trent University, Canada, in the group of Prof Neil Emery.

The successful candidate will use genome mining and genome editing to identify the enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of algal natural products. They will isolate new strains of algae from the wild and use analytical chemistry to assess their ability to make new and known natural products. The successful candidate will have delegated responsibility for safe laboratory practice within the group and contribute to the smooth running of the research laboratory, including the day-to-day supervision of junior lab members. They will also aid in writing publications, presenting research at national and international conferences, and liaising with collaborators. In addition to pursuing the goals of the research project, the successful candidate will be given support and freedom to develop their own research ideas. They will also be given the opportunity to undertake a small amount of undergraduate teaching (e.g., group tutorials) if desired.

Candidates must have a PhD (or have submitted their thesis prior to starting) in Biological Chemistry, Biochemistry, or closely related discipline. They should have demonstrable expertise in natural product chemistry including cell culturing, HPLC, mass spectrometry, and 1D and 2D NMR. Experience in molecular biology, particular genome editing, and algal biotechnology, will be highly advantageous. Candidates should have excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, and proven ability to work both independently and as an active member of a collaborative team.

The CV and/or cover letter should clearly exemplify how the candidate meets the criteria highlighted herein and in the Role Profile document. They should also describe the candidate’s motivation for applying for this position.

The position is available from 1st April 2024, and is fixed term for 12 months. The O’Neill Group is committed to EDI and particularly welcomes applications from candidates with backgrounds traditionally under-represented in academia. This is a full time (36.25 hours/week) position, but flexible working times and a small amount of home working are possible to support those with specific requirements.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Ellis O'Neill [email protected]. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
