The project will recruit a talented, proactive postdoctoral researcher working on an exciting interdisciplinary project funded by the Little Princess Fund within the Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) to address a Workplan entitled, “Targeting refractory and dormant stem cells in childhood leukaemia”. The post will be for 12 months in the first instance with possibility to extend and will contribute to the Blood Cancer and Stem Cell research group.

This post will be based within the new £100 million purpose-built Biodiscovery Institute (BDI) (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/research-areas/biodiscovery-instit... ) a world-leading hub of interdisciplinary research excellence that is shaping the future of health and biotechnology. The BDI is home to nearly 850 talented academics, researchers, clinicians and support staff bringing together groups including Haematology, Cancer, Stem Cells, Immunology, Pathology, Bioengineering and Pharmacy relevant to the project. The project builds on existing work in which candidate drugs that potentially target dormant and refractory stem cells in leukaemia have been identified but mechanisms-of-action need to be validated in advanced models of childhood disease. The project will combine stem cell technology, 3D and in vivo modelling and clinical samples, to evaluate the efficacy of a cohort of drugs against leukaemia and other blood cancers. De-risking of such drugs will provide the basis for future development within a therapy-accelerated programme of current and future clinical trials

The successful candidate for this post will be close to completion or hold a PhD in Haematology, Oncology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy or molecular biology related subject or equivalent.  They will combine excellence in research, collaboration, communication and meeting deadlines. It is a particular need for the project that that candidate has experience in tissue culture and in-vitro drug treatment of primary cells or cell lines along with cellular analysis such as fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry and colony assays and use of biochemical techniques such as protein analysis. Previous experience with blood cancer, stem cell and/or patient tissue culturing would be desirable along with key skills in for example CRISPR/Cas9 editing, qPCR / RNA profiling, high content imaging (e.g. confocal plate reader) and use of in vivo imaging systems. The job is offered on a fixed term basis until 31st December 2023. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours). Job share arrangements may be considered.
