We are seeking to recruit a Research Associate with expertise as a Creative (and critical) Technologist to work in the School of Design as part of the new UKRI funded project ‘Crafting a Healthier Internet of Things: People, Things and our Digital Society’. The aim for this project is to explore how we can define and foster a healthier relationship between people, the internet and things using the ethos and practices of craft, informed by knowledge within the humanities, augmented with technical know how and leveraging citizen engagement/collaboration.The project work will be focused in Newcastle, Gateshead and wider Northumberland.
This an exciting opportunity to work with an experienced team of design/craft researchers to help explore and demonstrate the way in which craft, as both ethos and method, can provide alternative visions of a healthier relationship with the internet; focusing on the field of IoT. For this post, we are seeking a Creative Technologist with a background in HCI or design research and practice, who has experience in building networked physical/digital artefacts. It is likely that the successful candidate will have a PhD (or one that is very close to completion). They will have a research track record (or other previous experience) in developing IoT artifacts and experiences, a commitment to collaborative working, and an interest in making physical/digital things with, and for, people. They will have good academic writing skills and a track-record of publishing in relevant leading conferences and journals in the fields of Design/Craft and/or HCI.
The project will employ two research associates across the 33-month timeline with staggered start and finish times. They will overlap for a substantial period of the project, with the expectation they will work closely together in delivering many of the key aspects of the project. This particular role will run from the launch of the project in September 2021 for 24 months and will focus principally on supporting the technical and creative aspects of the project, but will also involve aspects of community engagement and event organisation support.
While design often aspires to ubiquity and standardisation, craft thrives on specificity and bespokeness, which is often rooted in localism, and embodies the values of authenticity, provenance and care. Through working at a local level, in terms of both consideration and production, the project seeks to bring new perspectives and methods for conceptualizing and creating forms of IoT, embodying our craft ethos. As such we will create compelling examples of context specific, meaningful and trusted forms IoT in order to explore and understand the ways that we can change current trajectories across the sector. The project has been framed by the five questions posed by Mozilla’s Internet Health report (https://internethealthreport.org/2019/ ) and they will be partners on this project.
This is a fantastic opportunity to build an academic research profile, network with an interdisciplinary group of thinkers, actors and organizations with global standing, and undertake work that contributes to a re-imagining of our relationship with the internet through things.
