Research Associate (bio)electrochemistry fixed term

Updated: over 2 years ago
Location: Bath, ENGLAND
Job Type: Permanent
Deadline: 31 Oct 2021

We have an exciting research opportunity for a passionate and adventurous researcher wanting to apply their skills in applied (bio)electrochemistry for energy harvesting from bodily glucose.

About the role

At Bath, you will be working on the development of the glucose energy harvesting system, based on micro arrays of abiotic fuel cells, which will be used to power the implantable system. The role will mean you will be working closely with the collaborators from the other institutions involved in the project to be able to develop a technology that meets the energy demand of the implantable cardiac device to be developed and is integrated with the power management system required to store and release the energy generated.

About you

You will enjoy engaging staff of all backgrounds with different levels of experience in order to support the research project and achieve your own and the projects objectives. You will also have:

  • A PhD degree in chemical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry, physics, or materials science/engineering, or equivalent significant relevant experience and professional qualification
  • Expertise in (bio)electrochemistry and material science
  • Excellent oral, interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge fuel cell technology is desired but not essential

About the project

The project's vision is to eradicate avoidable mortality and disabilities caused by chronic conditions by generating a networked implantable system, comprising multiple bioelectronic nodes, each capable of sensing and intervening. A critical therapeutic driver in this space is the minimisation of invasiveness (device size and thus implantation method), reduced side effects and increased efficacy through a personalised intervention via continuous monitoring of the patient. This would allow for artificial intelligence (AI) to predict optimal therapies on the cloud to reprogram local parameters in the bioelectronic nodes in a fault-tolerant way.

This Research Associate vacancy is available as part of the ground-breaking project Symbiotic Intrabody Networks for Bioelectronics Therapeutics, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and involving collaborators from five English and Scottish universities with multidisciplinary expertise, ranging from engineering to clinical research and pathway to research translation into clinical trials.

The role is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering . For informal enquires please contact Dr Mirella Di Lorenzo. Email; [email protected] Telephone; 01225385574
