Research Associate/Assistant (Fixed Term) - Responsive Manufacturing of High Value Thin to Thick Films

Updated: over 2 years ago
Location: Cambridge, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 22 Aug 2021

The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology wishes to recruit a Research Assistant/Research Associate to work with Prof Alex Routh.

Our collaborative team between the Universities of Sheffield, Huddersfield and Cambridge has recently been awarded EPSRC funding for the project 'Responsive Manufacturing of High Value Thin to Thick Films'. As a result, we are offering a Research Assistant/Research Associate position at Cambridge. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with the other project partners developing fundamental science understanding of film drying and evolution of morphology within coatings. We will link our theoretical findings with experimental slot-die printing and machine learning algorithms to guide adaptation of industrial coating lines.

Within the project we will develop colloidal hydrodynamic models to incorporate arbitrary particle interactions and particle shapes. These will result in PDEs with thermodynamic expressions to account for interactions and drag terms adapted for shape. For more complex systems we will use DEM and compare with the simplified hydrodynamic solutions.

We are looking for a candidate with a PhD (or who is close to being awarded a PhD) in Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a related discipline. They should have experience with fluid mechanics, numerical modelling, coding and solution of PDEs and ideally will also have excellent lab skills and experience in using theoretical models to guide experimental investigations.
