A Post-Doc position working on the development of cardiac biosensors for use at the point of care.

Term: Fixed term (18 months)

The Centre for Advanced Measurement Science and Health Translation is a newly formed inter-disciplinary research hub hosted within the Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry where the University is partnering with National Measurement Laboratory (NML@LGC) and NHS Lanarkshire to develop cutting edge research projects in the area of measurement science and healthcare technology. Through a recent British Heart Foundation Translation Award the University is able to offer an 18-month PDRA position working on electrochemical biosensors and the high sensitivity detection of cardiac troponin. The associate will work in the Centre and report to Professor Damion Corrigan but will be involved in the wider BHF project with Dr Melanie Jimenez, Dr Andrew Ward, NHS Lanarkshire and National Measurement Laboratory.

The BHF translation award is a 36-month programme with a Go/No Go point at month 18. Subject to the project hitting its milestones a further 18 months of funding will be unlocked, allowing the extension of this PDRA post beyond the initial 18 months. The post involves development of a low-cost electrochemical platform for the detection of cardiac troponin in blood, serum or plasma and in the first half of the project there will be two PDRAs employed, one working on microfluidics and one working on assay development and electrochemical measurement. This post is the second one mentioned and so we are looking for someone with ideally experience in developing cardiac troponin or other electrochemical immunoassays in either academic or industrial environments, experience of working with magnetic particles, experience of bioconjugation and surface functionalisation and experience of running electrochemical assay measurements. The candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team including: chemists, biomedical engineers, systems engineers, clinicians and assay development scientists.

An ambition for this project once complete is to achieve impact by translating the developed technology for everyday use via a social enterprise, company formation or IP licensing.
