Summary:

The Department of Psychology is looking for an enthusiastic Research Assistant. This is an exciting opportunity to work on study that is testing the effect of providing caregivers with materials to promote early child language development.

Your main roles would be to support the research team to:

  • determine the feasibility and acceptability of administering a caregiver text messaging service by delivering it to ~200 families, approximately 25% of whose children will be at higher risk of language delay and who will be offered additional 1-1 support via video call
  •  determine the feasibility of evaluating child language in homes and online by collecting data and estimating effect sizes for child language outcomes at three and a half years of age across the four nations of the UK - as requested of BBC Education by DfE
  •  write up the feasibility and pilot study
  • As a PhD graduate with a background in Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, or related disciplines you will have the ability to communicate successfully with parents from a variety of backgrounds, understand the challenges they face, have experience of data management, an excellent understanding of the scientific method and experience of coding naturalistic caregiver-child interaction, collecting standardised measures of language development and writing up studies for publication.
