Applications are invited for a Research Assistant position to support Dr Brian Earp’s work on the ERC Horizon 2020-funded research project Counterfactual Assessment and Valuation for Awareness Architecture (‘CAVAA’) which is hosted by the Oxford Uehiro Centre.  The position is part-time (0.5 fte) and fixed-term to 31 August 2024.

The research focus of the support role is consciousness and the moral psychology and neuroethics of Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) contributing to substantive normative and philosophical debates in ethics.

Research duties may include undertaking literature reviews to form the basis for publications, or for presentation at conferences or public meetings; and contributing to collaborative research publications. The postholder will prepare pre-registration documents, design study materials, programme studies on Qualtrics, conduct data cleaning and perform relevant statistical analyses as directed. The role will also include some general project management and administrative support for the CAVAA project.

The postholder is required to hold a Master’s degree in psychology, together with some relevant research experience in the field of moral psychology in relation to topics in philosophy and bioethics, ideally involving judgments of moral status or standing and/or credit versus blame for human use of artificial intelligence.  Also required to possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within the established CAVAA research programme and have substantial experience with research study designs.
