Location: London, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 23 May 2021

The Sainsbury Wellcome Centre (SWC) commenced research operations in Spring 2016 bringing together world-leading scientists to investigate how brain circuits process information to generate perception, form memories and guide behaviour. Developed through the vision and partnership of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and Wellcome, and with substantial investment from these partners, the mission of the SWC is to generate experimentally testable theories of brain function.

The Branco lab study the mechanisms by which neurons integrate sensory information to generate behaviour that promote survival. The lab uses various innovative techniques including behaviour, neural recordings and imaging, optogenetics, anatomy, computer science and theoretical neuroscience.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a project investigating how the brain implements defensive behavioural choices using electrophysiological recording from neurons in the mouse midbrain. Working as part of a close-knit team, you will be responsible for training mice in a head-fixed set up, as well as for development, design and execution of behavioural experiments. You will also assist in surgical procedures and gather and collate data.

The post is funded for one year in the first instance, as part of a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship.

You should have prior experience of working within a research laboratory and handling rodents, as well as some experience in monitoring rodents and conducting behavioural experiments. Technical expertise in the calibration, maintenance and repair of animal behavioural setups and surgery is desirable, as well as some basic programming in python or MATLAB environments.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to use your initiative is essential.
