Applications are invited for a Temporary post (ending 31 Aug 2022 )of a Research Assistant within UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science
Personalised cancer therapy is dependent on accurate and informative prognostic and predictive tests to determine patient outcome in both the absence and presence of therapy, respectively.
The primary aim of OPTi-PREDICT is to fast-track the validation of clinical decision support systems (DSS) for breast and prostate cancer, in both the prognostic and predictive settings. For early-stage breast cancer, we will develop the OncoMasTR DSS, to support the stratification of newly diagnosed patients into low and high-risk categories, informing treatment choice.
For high-risk early-stage breast cancer, PrediCare-EarlyBC will determine the most suitable chemotherapy protocol for individual patients. Ultimately, the goal is to progress these DSS towards clinical implementation, improving survival rates and quality of life for these patients, by assigning the most appropriate treatment.
Central to the delivery of these objectives is developing a set of protein biomarkers to segregate breast cancer patients in high/low risk of recurrence, so that the low-risk patients can safely avoid chemotherapy and its associated toxicities.
This Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded position will be based in the UCD Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research (https://www.ucd.ie/conway/). He/she will report to Prof. William Gallagher and Dr. Arman Rahman.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary environment and develop skills in the field of molecular pathology, digital pathology, and image analysis. The ideal candidate should have some exposure to routine histopathology laboratory work, but this is not a must. Workload will include, not limited to, automated and manual immunohistochemistry, multiplexing, digital slide scanning, and image analysis using commercial software.
The candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, willing to adapt to working in a multi-cultural research group. A successful candidate might consider this position as a stepping stone into the academic or industrial histopathology based laboratory work, in their future career path.
Fixed Salary: €26,609 per annum.
